Introduction
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women worldwide and remains a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality. In 2020, an estimated 2.26 million new cases were diagnosed globally, accounting for a significant portion of the overall cancer burden in women. In many high-income countries, breast cancer represents nearly one-third of all new female cancer diagnoses, underscoring both the scale of the disease and the importance of comprehensive care.
Survivorship Care is Crucial
Thanks to advances in early detection and standard cancer treatments, many women now survive breast cancer and live long into survivorship. But survival is only part of the story. Conventional treatments — including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and endocrine therapy — can be lifesaving, yet they often come with a significant symptom burden: fatigue, pain, neuropathy, sleep disruption, cognitive changes, menopausal symptoms, and emotional distress. These physical and psychological effects can persist long after treatment ends, impacting daily function, quality of life, and overall well-being.
What Integrative Oncology Offers
Integrative oncology fills this gap by bringing evidence-informed supportive care into the cancer journey. This approach incorporates lifestyle optimization — including nutrition, physical activity, mind-body practices, and symptom-specific therapies — alongside conventional treatment. These therapies are not meant to replace standard medical care, but to support symptom management, enhance quality of life, and empower women to take an active role in their recovery. Research shows that practices such as mindfulness, yoga, acupuncture, stress management, and tailored exercise can reduce treatment side effects like fatigue, anxiety, and pain, while improving emotional well-being and physical function.
Beyond symptom support, emerging evidence suggests that integrative strategies — especially physical activity and lifestyle interventions — may also play a role in reducing the risk of cancer recurrence and improving long-term outcomes. Structured exercise, for example, has been shown in large clinical studies to be associated with lower recurrence and mortality rates in cancer survivors, and laboratory research indicates that exercise-induced biological changes may directly influence cancer-related pathways.
A Holistic Approach to Breast Cancer
For women navigating breast cancer today, integrative oncology offers a whole-person framework that acknowledges the complexity of survivorship: physical, emotional, cognitive, and social. By combining the strengths of conventional oncology with supportive, evidence-based therapies, this approach aims not only to treat disease, but to enhance recovery, resilience, and quality of life throughout and beyond the cancer experience. Here is how I help my patients with breast cancer:
Nutrition Assessment
Nutrition plays a critical role in energy levels, weight changes, bone health and sleep.
Areas of focus may include:
-
Plant-based, but high protein, nutritional counselling.
-
Cruciferous vegetables for their potential anti-cancer properties.
-
Soy products to reduce recurrence and aid with hot flashes.
-
Discussing therapeutic meal timing, such as intermittent fasting, while ensuring ample energy is consumed.
Targeted Oral Supplementation
When appropriate, supplements may be used to help with symptom management and decrease risk of recurrence.
This may include:
-
Vitamin D optimization for secondary risk reduction and bone health.
-
Medicinal mushrooms to enhance immune function and reduce recurrence.
-
Evidence-informed herbal products for sleep or pain.
-
Nutrients that support cognitive function and memory
(All supplementation is individualized and reviewed for safety and interactions.)
Acupuncture
Acupuncture can be a valuable supportive therapy in breast cancer care. Acupuncture has been found to help with:
-
Memory and cognitive function
-
Hot flashes and sleep
- Post-surgical pain, or joint pain from chemotherapy and hormone therapy.
